The recidivism rate for kids who commit murder is almost nonexistent. You aren’t protecting society, just protecting the violent and bloodthirsty prison industrial complex to sate your desire for punishment.

Agreed. The crime he committed was horrible and he deserves a long sentence, but the idea of someone spending all but the twilight years of their adulthood in prison after what they did at 16 is unsettling.

YES. All of this is what I’ve been thinking when reading the articles and listening to last week’s My Favorite Murder podcast episode covering this story as well. In the end, you don’t just set up your adopted child (regardless of their age) who has a mental disorder in an apartment and peace out to another country.
