It's very much in the spirit of FC, IMO. Singer took a lot from Vaughn. It's vastly superior to his original, deeply overrated two films.

FC and DOFP do allow the X-Men to be fantastical, IMO. My annoyance with Apocalypse at a glance is that Singer appears to be bringing back the drab gray aesthetic as well.

The X-Men movies didn't actually get good until First Class. The third act (everything after "One Year Later", I think) was a complete reshoot. They also totally changed the Doom character there and Tim Blake Nelson, who was originally to play the Mole Man.

And everything in the second half (where Doom returns) is terrible and rushed, as opposed to the first half which has potential but is still rushed.

The first half is flawed but interesting - the opening with the child versions of Reed and Ben is great, but Ben quickly disappears from the film for a long stretch and the relationships with Johnny and Sue are barely there. Doom doesn't work at all.
