Forbes has an article up about it, apparently the showrunners were the issue, GRRM, most of the cast and HBO were of the opinion that it should have been 20 episodes a season and at least 10 seasons, but Benioff and Weiss were strongly pushing to wrap it up last season and refused to hand it off to anyone else.

I feel your pain! I was 12 & burned my shoulders so badly, the texture of my skin was changed for years. If I do end up with skin cancer, that will be where it pops up .
