The reference to Portman’s character being half Asian is one line in a second book so I believe she had no idea. It isn’t like her being Asian is a an actual plot point like with the Emma Stone film whose name I can’t remember or clearly more approriate for the setting like with Ghost in the Machine.

I love how we’re all worried about book transcripts and timelines like that would have had ANY impact on this film NOT casting a ‘bankable’ (that’s a euphemism for white) lead actress.

In addition to the casting, every trailer I’ve seen for this has just looked....not good. The books are cool, but I feel like a lot of the elements just aren’t going to translate well to the screen without looking kind of silly.

This is excellent news. I had never heard of her until I stumbled across her HBO special a couple months ago. I think she’s fantastic.
