One thing the HP fandom didn’t change, as this comment thread can attest, is that fandoms will never quit immediately engaging in pissing contests about whose is better or did it first or is more special.

“Don’t make me feed you to one of the models”

For me, it’s “gird your loins!”

My favorite thing to say is “by all means, move at a glacial pace. you know how that thrills me”.

Fashion porn + Meryl Streep + Emily Blunt + Stanley Tucci = why people love this movie. When I used to flip past channels, I’d stop to watch it whenever it was on, no matter what point of the movie, but especially before the makeover montage. I cannot resist a makeover montage.

That sounds like Kal Penn’s story. His name is actually Kalpen Modi, that’s what he went by when he was doing stuff in the Obama administration.

I think Chloe touched on this once in another interview. I seem to remember her saying that when she went by Chloe Wang that she got docked on both sides. Her name would hamper her ability to be cast for white parts, and when casting directors would call her in for Asian parts (not that there are many, obviously)

OHDAMN

They want us treated as others because they see us as “others”. According to some studies, Asians are actually seen as one of the least American of POC groups (last I checked, Latinos were the only POC group seen as less American).

Yup, and it’s just as bad (if not worse) for black folks and Latinos who have “ethnic”-sounding names. Ugh, just... ugh.

A lot of my immigrant friends have a corresponding “white” equivalent name because it really does seem to help in the workplace, whether it’s to land the job in the first place or just to make climbing the ladder easier. My sister is Amy at work and Amina to us (not that big of a change), but she did notice it became

The 90's and early 00's saw a huge appetite for martial arts flicks that launched the Hollywood career of many of the people listed (Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Chow Yun Fat, Lucy Liu, Joan Chen, Michelle Yeoh, etc). Think about how many big/budget Hollywood (mostly martial arts) films starred East Asians back then versus

Your list of (a) actors who originally became famous in Hong Kong cinema before finding crossover success in Hollywood and (b) Asian-American actors who, I think most of the people reading this article would agree, have not found as much fame or success as they deserve, would seem to prove her point.

Yeah all of those actors started their careers decades ago when Asians were particularly en vogue. Not only that they were cast in explicitly Asian Roles. The roles that Chloe has had are non specific about race.

Exactly this. I’m Indian and I have met a few non-South Asians (usually white or black people) who studied Bharatanatyam (classical South Indian dance) for many years, studied under Indian gurus, lived and danced in India, and hold great reverence for the dance. That’s not cultural appropriation, that’s having a deep

For centuries now there have been white Americans who love to put on ‘red face’ - play Indian. There are whole organizations devoted to it. As an actual Indian/First Nations person, I find the phenomenon both puzzling and creepy. These people often insist they are imitating some aspect of a culture perfectly -better

Nine West, Mossimo, Steve Madden, Jessica Simpson, Banana Republic, Charlotte Russe, Express aren’t “special advisors” to the president.

The policy was for data-gathering. Any policy changes based on the collected data would come afterwards. You by definition can’t have “intended results” from data-gathering, that would be bias. You can have “expected results” but you can’t have “intended results”

I get it. At least with Twitterfingers, you know what you’re getting: A rude, crude, mean-spirited, racist, misogynistic, bigot with narcissistic personality disorder (and maybe dementia) who doesn’t give a flying fuck about anything except (in no particular order) his wallet, his ego, and his daughter the Vankster.

Yes :-( Not loving people like the Parent Trap parents are portrayed to be (except for the whole ditching a child thing), but yes. :-(
