Ah yes, I’m here 45 minutes after your post hit the web and I’m not at all surprised at the commentariat’s general grumpiness. ‘Waaahhhh it looks like the turd I just pooped whilst on my bathroom break’ and the like.
The ft-1 was so glorious. It really is a shame that this is just a z4 with toyota body work. It looks like a Chinese rip off of the BRZ/86
Sorry, but I kinda love it. It’s a “FU” design, you like it, or you don’t. Toyota doesn’t really seem to give a damn. They made it the way they wanted to. Certainly not a committee, buyer-feedback, focus group design, which I love. I’d be very sorely tempted, it’ll all depend on the price.
...And had a 2JZ swap instead of this unreliable BMW straight six. Ugh, if only!
But if only it had a manual!
Am I the crazy one that think it’s not a very good looking car?
Proportions are horrid compared to the FT-1. Nice outlet mall BMW.
Here come all the people that weren’t going to buy one anayway proclaiming that they aren’t going to buy one.
Want to love it. Don’t love it.
Please Jalopnik - have this guy write more of your car reviews. I got halfway through it and had to go back up to check the name of the author because the review was so well written. Please keep up the good work (and maybe review the Veloster N next...)
It’s funny you mention that. I have a background in dealer ops management before taking up a career in building software and interface experiences... with a couple OEMs as past clients, and one of them was a certain Detroit-based make. So yes, I do have an idea.
Hyundai Genesis coupe. nobody ever talked about it. It sat in this middle area between a muscle car and a sports/track car so if yo wanted a muscle car it was not enough muscle and if you wanted sports car it was just a little too rough around the edges in the handling department.
I can win this with my car. Manual, 5cyl, Haldex, wagon, 36mpg highway.
Good call, this or the Matrix..
Can’t overthink this. Go with almost 200hp, 6 speed manual with a hatch (and most likely a dead dry sunroof and nice sounding (if visually barf educing) stereo). As long as it hasn’t been beat to hell, it will be reliable. It’s also not a bad looker.
Mini Cooper S R53. 2005-6 is best. Possibly the best FWD car I have ever owned/driven. Supercharged 210hp and seems to drive on rails. It is super cheap and buckets of fun. For enthusiasts only, however, as they are no Corollas when it comes to maintenance.
I think the issue with the Mk4 GTi was that it had the reputation as being a bit soft - at least compared to the Mk2 - and it was perceived more as a trim level rather than a dedicated hot hatch (in Europe at least there were V5 and diesel GTi variants of the Mk4). Doesn’t help that it now lives in the shadow of the…
First generation Lexus Is300, comes with the renowned Toyota 2JZ inline 6 motor. Can be had pretty cheap too
