If you read the book Factory Girls by Leslie Chang, which is about female factory workers in Dongguan, China, there’s an interesting anecdote where one of the women she interviews gifts her a (real) Coach bag, complete with a the insert about how every Coach bag is specially crafted and blah blah blah. The women

I think airbushing out the nipples and the pubes out of the photos has been a way of discouraging us from even thinking about the male gaze. Like, “Look at these VS Angels! They’re basically manniquins and not real women! Think of them however you want!”

Lovely! seems like a great site! Thanks!

My mom never commented much on my looks, positive or negative, and mostly focused on things that were actually under my control— my accomplishments, but also maybe a cute hairstyle or outfit. Now that I realize in retrospect she had an eating disorder, I really understand why she did that, and am deeply touched by it.

I came here to make this exact comment.

That’s beautiful! I only have but one star to give you. Do you have a recipe? I’m trying to get over my fear of squash (based on my WASP relatives insisting on serving plain, boiled squash.)

This exactly. Also, women who are deep into an addiction are not necessarily paying attention to birth control or their cycles, and might even being engaging in survival prostitution. I met a woman in a treatment program who only learned she was several months pregnant when she OD’d. She was lucky enough to get an

Thank you for your insight. I suppose I am pretty unfamilar with the idea of idea of a house “master” (again, ugh, they should change the name of that title asap) and the level of mentorship it implies. Your mother’s research sounds very interesting and extremely valuable. You’ve definitely given me more stuff to

Thank you for adding some context. That’s all important information to know. I’m still not convinced the master’s (ugh) tone-deafness amounts to a fire-able offense. But it’s true that I’m not familar with this kind of university role, since I went to a huge public university.

And think of them saying their vows in their adorable Irish accents!

My husband is a professor and this makes him very, very nervous. Luckily he’s in a STEM field, so the subject he teachers is apolitical, but, for example recently a student came to him and requested he reschedule an exam because of a minor religious holiday. The student made the request only a couple days before the

I take a long bath pretty much every day. My skin seems to used to it, though I feel a bit guilty about wasting water (though where I live it’s not as much of an issue.) The time I spent in California with only a tiny shower was also the most anxious, miserable time in my life; I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

Don’t forget “... just sayin!”

Exactly.

So up until last January, I taught at a vocational college in a small city in Guangdong province, where attidudes tend to be more on the tradtional side. One of the assignments I used to give was for them to give a survey to fellow students on a Chinese website (similar to Survey Monkey) and explain the results to the

That’s so cool!

Is this your FT job? If so I am jealous!

I did a master’s program at a womens’ college, and while the graduate program did admit a few men, most of my classes were mostly women. The atmosphere was more collaborative than competitive. I loved my time there, and I met some fabulous friends. I wish I had considered the option as an undergrad.
