Plenty is changing. Since the novels are no longer canon, even within their own universe, all new licensed novels will follow the continuity of the new films. There will no longer be novels that continue the established stories and characters.

I adore the Super Mario games and Super Mario 64 in particular, but it's definitely a dark horse on the franchise. Current playthroughs are marred by how depressingly basic the games are and just how little is actually pulled from that universe.
