It's not a happy ending, it's a saccharine "fairy tale" ending.
One of the rules of writing is, to some extent, give your audience what they want. A very insignificant minority of fans wanted this ending. Another minority wanted this ending, but now as executed. The majority wanted the writers to actually fulfill their promises and provide an adult ending.
The writers spent nearly half the show's running setting-up Barney and Robin, even when most people never bought it. They then focused the entirety of the final season on their wedding, which only forced most fans to become in a relationship that they otherwise would not have believed in.
