That's a VQ. Our local pull-a-part have a 3.5L VQ in the front awhile back and it looked exactly like that.

I remember seeing a post on some forum which showed pictures of an LS block next to a number of other popular engines, such as the 2JZ, RB25, Modular V8, etc. The LS really is tiny.
