And it’s also due to changes in the diagnostic criteria and an increase in doctors’ awareness of autism. The rates just seem higher because we’ve become better at actually diagnosing when the condition exists.

That is my guess. And it is my understanding that autism diagnoses are up because we have a better understanding about the spectrum. There are also environmental or even genetic factors at play since kids who aren’t vaccinated can have autism.
