I don't have anything to add. Just want to say that this is an excellent observation.
To some extent, the show is focusing on sexism and misogyny in modern America; so it's feasibly intentional that 2010s symbolism has been stacked on 1980s symbolism.
I see the point, and agree with it, but I think that the metaphor clashes with the literal events of the show. The statement about White Male Privilege focuses on the results of the mind control, whereas what happened in the show (and the resultant support group) focus on the mind control itself.
Placing a gay woman in a role that would typically be given to a straight man is nice to watch from a social perspective, but I think the character is one-dimensional.

Agreed! He's more a representation of casual sexism/misogyny than anything else, and that doesn't weaken the characterization of Jessica—or anyone else—nor does it make the conflict less engaging.
