Most are cable shifted and don’t have a direct mechanical linkage from the gear lever (front wheel drive cars). So the negligible pressure resting your hand on the gear lever doesn't really transfer to the shifting…

This thing looks like it was designed in the early 2000's. Reminds me a lot of that new Shelby Cobra concept from around the same time as the GT debuted mid 2000's.
