Actually the Douglas DC-8 was the first commercial acft to break the sound barrier with out crashing. It was cn 45622/137 and on 21 August 1961 it intentionally broke the sound barrier at Mach 1.012 in controlled flight. The acft went on later to fly for CP Air as CF-CPI.
