Well so many rules in soccer are “in the opinion of the referee” and all of the rules were written based upon the opinion of the referee being in real time.  Thus a penalty in the box that the referee catches (which isn’t always going to be caught) has a harsh punishment.

Both “penalties” were encroached upon by the French players. Even if the rule were “absolute” letter of the law, VAR clearly and obviously fucked up.
