Katharine, I have been waiting for your take as it’s generally insightful (and I usually agree with it :)). But I think, like most of the pre-air reviews, you seemed to miss that this is TNG but with focus on the “middle management” “everyperson” ship that has to be the bulk of starfleet plus a view into the rooms 2…
You definitely have her number.
It’s not exactly a secret that MacFarlane is a huge fan of Star Trek, so I can’t say I’m surprised he ended up making a homage to the franchise. I’m one of the biggest Star Trek nerds out there, and I thought the pilot was good. Not great, and definitely filled with his kind of humor (which sometimes doesn’t line up…
I went in with low expectations. I was glad to not get a comedy show. Yeah, some jokes were okay. It was not a brilliant example of sci-fi writing, but it was entertaining and I did like some of the characters. Like any series it will take about six episode or so to find the voice of all the characters. I am willing…
Yes to all. I’m with you. Bring back Optimism!
*DID* you watch it? Because by the end she clearly wasn’t and had been working to help him the whole time secretly. Character resolution. Optimism.
Is it possible you were looking for a place to shit and just picked this show? I’ve never been blown away by the first episode of anything and think it’s a little soon to dump on this. Pinch it off and wait a few episodes. Thanks.
While the pilot didn’t immediately win me over, I have optimism in the direction the show could go. I just think it needs to find it voice right now, and strike a better balance of jokes and space drama.
I rather liked it. Its not great, but for a pilot, not bad. It’s a breezy, loving homage to TNG, with jokes. And while the humor was often weak, it was mostly character based, and not McFarlane’s usual parade-of-references shtick, so I’m hoping that as the writers and cast get a better handle on the characters, the…
I liked it! It wasn’t an hour of laughs. There were a few good chuckles, seemed like it had plenty of heart. The visuals were good.
I was waiting for the iO9 bash all day to rebut.....
Fuck all that- I watched and it AND enjoyed it. I’m willing to give it time to get better. It strikes me as a 30 rock set in a Star Trek universe.
I expected to hate it, and all the terrible reviews had me ready to enjoy a train wreck, because in general I don’t care for Seth MacFarlane’s stuff so I was prepared for a little schadenfreude. But it was ok. I wouldn’t say it was good, but for a pilot, I think it showed some potential. As for the lame sex jokes,…
I enjoyed The Orville and laughed out loud at some jokes.
So you compared it to mostly movies? How brave.
I liked last night’s pilot episode. It felt like a fanfic mash-up of ST:TNG and ST:DS9. Even down to the score and sound effects. I didn’t realize how much I wanted something like that until last night.
Here’s the thing: I don’t think MacFarlane intended it to be a parody. I think he meant for it to be a loving homage to Star Trek: The Next Generation, albeit with dick jokes. Compared to something like Galaxy Quest or Other Space, it’s pretty much a straight pastiche of TNG with a lot of Family Guy-style humor…
Why she doesn’t sign her e-mails ~ is beyond me.
