I can see good and bad in the legacy of most, including LBJ. But IMO what is seen as Hefner’s good work was actually what he did to promote his brand as a sophisticated/cool/intelligent alternative to the raunchier brands of the time. Did anything he do with regards to Black people put him or his business at risk?

He risked nothing by “accepting” black people as members or “bunnies”. I don’t think for a second he would have done so if he thought it would hurt his business.

He had a problem with being referred to as a man with “bitches” because he felt disrespected. He had zero - not even a miniscule amount- of respect for his “girlfriends”.

It tells you a lot that he didn’t want to be buried next to any woman that knew him.

But he was a civil rights and free speech leader, right?

Critics of second wave feminists should read this.

He’s still mad at Jared for voting as a woman. No new job titles for Jared for a few days.

The country as a whole and its government were overtly and deeply racist in the 1940's with regards to Japanese Americans and African Americans. Conventional thinking was that they were inherently inferior people. I remember when I was a kid seeing an encyclopedia (World Book) that had illustrations of examples of

Note he said he would write a check, not that he had. He planned to see how this played out before coughing up any cash. Grifter.

Such a long post you’ve written just to tell me I spend too much time here. Well, I knew self-awareness wasn’t your strong suit. But you’re a HUMANITARIAN! Kudos to you!

Why are there question marks in the headline? Was it on advice from counsel, in these post-Gawker days? These are questions, the headline would seem not.

I don’t think the “age inappropriate” paperbacks did me any harm, and might have actually been good for me, since otherwise everything I read or watched was checked out. The paperbacks slipped through the parental controls because they could be bought with pocket change!

Calling out sexism doesn’t make a woman sexist, any more than calling out racism makes a PoC a racist. You’re in the wrong place for that crap. Yeah, you’re done. Try the Proud Boys, they like keeping women silent and on a pedestal.

In the late sixties- early seventies drugstores and markets would have rotating racks of paperbacks on display. Cheap enough for a kid to buy without asking a parent for money/permission. Books for adults and kids all mixed together. At 11 I saw the first volume of Lord of the Rings and had no idea what was about

So now you are telling me what to think, but you say you are nice. Interesting logic. I have an opinion and I stand by it. Dickish jokes like those here making fun of the supposed trumpishness of these shooting victims are pathetic and disgusting. You think I’m condescending because I called people like you out on

Yes, you notice how Hillary’s hair is always carefully arranged to cover her prison tats.

I agree with the first part . It’s because we act like tribes and too often have nothing but contempt for each other. There are trump voters who think he’s a lousy person but we on the left focus onthevocal lock her up chanters. The right sees us as heartless as**** who joke about white chuchgoers getting shot.

There’s no official arbiter. But if you ask your mom or a nice teacher, they can explain common decency to you. You are free to laugh at whatever you want to, but they can help you understand why making fun of freshly-murdered people can seem dickish to a lot of folks.
