people are being critical of her ‘work’ because it mostly seems to consist of riffing on decorative-throw-pillow slogans and hitting the enter key a whole bunch
audiences are in no way duty-bound to say positive things about every ‘artist’ and the notion that criticism is ‘tearing down’ is a toxic one

my beautiful daughter

Is this a good place to put quality contemporary poetry as an antidote? Here’s “Lovejoy Street” by A.E. Stallings (she does a lot of free verse, but not for lack of technical ability, as this shows):

I write poetry, very unsuccessfully. It’s painstaking and difficult and I hate myself, but I’ve always resisted the ad-world people (I work as a copywriter, literally above some of you folks, I think) who surround me and say, “Don’t send your stuff to journals, just do something yourself. Design a website, make a cool

rupi kaur sucks. there’s soooooo much good poetry right now that it’s infuriating how popular her lazy bullshit is. people defend here like “ohhh he’s a nonwhite woman if you don’t like her you’re sexist and racist” but there are sooooo many other nonwhite female poets who are a bajillion times more talented than

This sentence is incredible:

ee cummings thinks that rupi kaur

fuck this shit.

>Kaur does not like to read when she is writing, and says that she hasn’t finished a book all year.

well, he did crib his most famous line from god

when
other writers
judge my poetry
i don’t know
how to read
because

When I think of poetry, I imagine the creative process to be a little more difficult than taking a mundane sentence or two, removing punctuation, and splitting it up over multiple lines.

Who knew that by today’s standards Popeye would be considered a poet.

Just so we’re all on the same page: her poetry is bad. Like, really bad: sentimental, cliche, nothing surprising or new in there. I had hoped she was just young, but she’s also ignorant, it seems. Sigh.

This point should be shouted from the rooftops.

First, thank you for the work you do. I am utterly appalled by our lack of government response, especially the lack of foresight with the navy ships we have meant specifically for this purpose. Has the Comfort even reached PR yet? The fact that Oxfam is stepping in when we have the means but lack the leadership is

I agree. In fact, that’s exactly why I was said “this is more proof of his racism and blatant disregard for Black and Brown people”. And I don’t care about Bush’s ignorance. His response to Katrina was also because he didn’t give a fuck about Black people. Something tells me if Katrina had impacted middle class

No, this is not. This is worse. I truly believe GW’s Katrina response was pure ignorance, inability to handle a natural disaster, and simply not understanding the magnitude of what needed to be done. But I do think that the Bush administration tried. Did they succeed? Not really, but they tried.
