If Subaru will put a CVT in the WRX I can’t assume any manufacturer has any common sense about where CVTs belong.

You’d be wrong. It was rare because of it’s cost and it was very fast for the time period. It was also extremely durable and reliable.

I thought that engine was manufactured by Mercury Marine.

But the transmission choices will remain extremely bad.
