Poor Brandon Routh. That dude can’t catch a break.
Poor Brandon Routh. That dude can’t catch a break.
If you told 17 year old me that his favorite book was going to be adapted by his favorite filmmaker he woulda told you to take a hike. If you told him that Gillian Anderson was going to play media, he woulda said “I’ll be in my bunk.” And he would’ve thought he was hilarious.
My frustration with Carol has been the recent move to ‘forget’ about certain pieces of (pretty messed up) continuity. The Carol I grew to love around Civil War was kind of a mean girl. She loved shoes and magazines and kicking ass and not suffering fools. Now she’s tough, but I feel like they’ve been so afraid of her…
And in that every big crossover event (which Marvel went from doing ‘every so often’ to ‘once a year’ to ‘ceaselessly and without end’) has to have a major character death, probably one that doens’t last.
Spoilers for years old comics:
Like how Thor and Bucky died in Fear Itself only to be brought back within weeks.
Then stay tuned for part II, when stuff gets really weird!
That’s remarkably similar to my experience! Friend had Warcraft II, watched him play it, got into Warcraft 3.
Carol Danvers is a really complex character. She had her time as Ms. Marvel for a very long time and was... not treated very well by most writers. Movie Bob has a great video series about it.
Spoilers for Joe Hill’s new book, The Fireman:
As I said, Namor is one of those characters like Spider-Man or the Thing or Doctor Doom who can be really versatile.
Here is the Chris Sims story I mentioned, it’s a good read:
That’s a good point. My problem with Singer is that he clearly (to me) disdains the X-Men comics and makes movies that seemed to be based on skimming a wiki entry. The fact that he’s put Storm (the most important X-Men character) in what? 5 movies now? 4? And she’s never been recognizably Storm in any of them shows…
Your English seems first rate to me, but then again, I did teach remedial 9th grade English, so I’ve seen quite a range of ability.
And your take on Namor is fascinating! If you were up for it, I’d love to hear more.
If I ever did write an article about that (and you have me very interested!) it would be for Revels…
Nicole, are you a WoW player? Or do you go back even further in Warcraft fandom? Or are you just naturally a loremaster?
I’ve got some DC articles planned too! Revels is gonna be great, it’s taken us a few years to get it off the ground, but we have a lot of momentum now. I’m going to be the regular comics contributer. I’m very open to any suggestions of things anyone would like to know more about, either here or to do in a more…
No dude, that is definitionally routine killing. Big enough to hurt, but small enough not to mess with mvoie plans. (I know Rhodey is in the movies, but no one is walking out of Civil War looking to buy Rhodey comics. Trust me as a guy who sells them).
That’s... so... sad! How did this tragedy occur!?
The X-comics themselves were doing a pretty good job at making me not want to read them, especially in those Bendis years (I have EXTREMELY complicated feelings about Brian Michael Bendis).
Sounds like we agree. I just can’t stop myself from recommending good comics when the opportunity presents itself. It is my gift, it is my curse, to recommend comics to a world that hates and fears them.
Mystique is great; she could carry a solo story. But the character Jennifer Lawrence plays in those movies is peripherally related to Mystique at best.
I’m glad to hear about your enthusiasm, and I agree that Olivier Coipel is killing it in a way I haven’t seen since he did JMS’s Thor in the mid-00s. But killing major characters is par for the course in events. It’s on the bingo card if you will (and yes, I have a bingo card).
I have similar worries. The X-franchise has hardly resembled the comics and mental illness is tough to write about. But I trust that Noah Hawley and that killer cast will make an interesting show, just maybe not one that’s too true to the comics.
Well aren’t you optimistic. If Singer ever includes a version of Destiny in his films that even vaguley resembles the comics, PM me and I’ll Venmo you $10. (That’s a thing right? All my younger friends tell me to use Venmo when we order pizza at D&D).
Point is, dream big buddy, a Mystique movie is going to be about the…
