I can't understand people's umbrage and perplexity over the singular "they." It's as if someone said, "How can 'you' possibly be both singular and plural?' "

It does as much harm as the person allows it to. But Bart Fargo's point is that it shouldn't be enshrined in law. You call me c—-, I call you a jerk, that's just free speech in action. You call me c—- and I have you fined or arrested, that's a problem.

They're optional in English. If you're using a foreign word as a foreign word, put it in italics.
