You're only taking into account the FIRST Contra. There was a whole series of increasingly brutal Contra games, and I would say Contra 4 was on par with that. Very similar to Contra Hard Corps.

WayForward is usually good about the difficulty levels. I mean, Contra 4 was on par, and so was Double Dragon Neon.

I've never understood why people get so ramped up over a fucking game. I've been playing for over 30 years, and aside from getting mad at the game itself for pulling some dumb bullshit occasionally, I've never found myself raging because of an online match.
