I don't know if tequila really competes well on the low end. It's really hard to top a bottle of Buffalo Trace at $20-25. But you can get some really fantastic tequila between $40-50. Casa Noble Reposado is my go-to for sipping, and it usually runs around $45.
Gin is way more hipster-y than Bourbon, IMO. And try Ransom (Portland)'s Old Tom Gin. It'll change your life.
