That seems like the more likely issue. If you ever get a chance to peer inside of an equipment bay of a fighter jet, they are absolutely filthy. Everything is covered in oil, grease, fuel, etc. So if the OBOGS system is pulling air from within one of those bays, it's likely to have a lot of impurities in it that…

They haven't had these issues with other fighter jets. Just the F-22 which, as the atircle states, uses an OBOGS system. F-16's, for example, do not generate their own O2, but have a LOX bottle that feeds the system.
