It's pick and choose based on effort vs. cost savings. I did a lower balljoint on an IS300 because I knew it was about a 4-6 hour job (for me), I had already ordered the parts and I knew a shop would charge significantly more than what I was willing to pay to fix it.
I'm not sure it's a catch all situation - "necessity is the mother of invention" can encompass the creative process as well.
