There's a serious film he made with Joaquin Phoenix years ago that I still haven't seen, but which sounds very good - a drama about some backpackers who get done for smuggling drugs in Thailand. I still think there's a decent actor in there somewhere

Absolutely, and it's a great film, and it still holds up (I've seen it many times and it never fails to get me like it first got me when I was 13) … plus Gibson is brilliant in it.
