It is surprising, isn't it? Plus he's never come across as the money-grubbing type,and has always seemed more interested in making art than hoarding cash. I don't know how high income tax in Spain is if you're wealthy (certainly less than the UK, because that's why Sean Connery moved there).

i've been very pleasantly surprised at how a series that started off tackier than a rerun of Dynasty has become a must-watch show. It's still gloriously cheesy in places, and the direction can be sometimes a little too jaunty, but it's thoroughly engrossing and superbly acted, and surprisingly moving
