I really think you’re misreading the Joan scene. She said she’d send away her son specifically to get the horrified reaction from him so that she could then admonish him for what an ass he had been (as she did).

It’s a person very closely related to a famous person. Also lots of people do think babies are cute. That combination makes them somewhat interesting to people who care about celebrities.
