So, we say the “Golden Rule” is to treat others as we would like to be treated, but I say that there is a “Platinum Rule” that we should treat others as they, themselves, would like to be treated.

So given that there’s an even eight teams per conference, and that that number will not decrease for many reasons, not the least of which is that powers of two are great for brackets, why not combine the first two rounds into a World Cup-style pool play with only the winners of each of the two pools (per conference)

Shortening the season is probably out due to financial reasons, and stretching it out would impinge on the pre-season (because the playoffs already starting too late makes that direction impossible), which would cause its own problems with injury and quality of play.

It’s a win that Duke lost, yet a loss that anything from South Carolina won.
