Please read the actual ruling that was released by the IAAF. In the third paragraph it clearly states that it only applies to 46XY DSD individuals. Which I would say would more commonly be understood as Intersex individuals who have a Y chromosome, like men have. Semenya would not have any reason to protest this…
This whole debate is really strange to me, because the pro-Caster should be allowed to run does not acknowledge, at all, that she is socially female or her gender is female, but biologically, it seems, that she is closer to male.
Historically X,Y female athletes have not been allowed to compete in the women’s category. IIRC, prior to 1999, there would be no question that Semenya was not eligible because female athletes had mandatory sex verification (the IIRC, is just that I can’t remember the exact year the mandatory was suspended, but it was…
No, she didn’t. It is very frustrating how poorly reported all of this has been. For the majority of the history of women’s elite sports, intersex women with Y chromosomes were disqualified from competing in the women’s category. There are female athletes who lost medals and records because their intersex conditions…
Caster Semenya is 46 XY DSD (disorder of sex development) and has XY chromosomes. Her testosterone level is well into the male range (7.7 nmol/l or higher). The decision by the CAS makes this very clear (paragraphs 3 and 4):
But we do know she's intersex because the new ruling only applies to individuals with XY chromosomes. If she did not have XY chromosomes the ruling wouldn't impact her.
Nobody has the “right” to compete in whatever athletic event they want. What are you even talking about?
Caster could end this in a second. Release a reliable physical and genetic exam and claim the women’s world’s records for the next two centuries.
It sucks for her, no argument there. But “fair” doesn’t mean everyone gets what they want. For a women’s division to exist at all, a line has to be drawn somewhere, and someone will always be just barely on the wrong side of it. The best outcome for her is unfair for well over 99% of women, and the good of the many…
You have to draw the line somewhere, and there will always be someone just outside the line who feels burned. But still, you have to draw the line somewhere. And as Deadspin’s actual expert in running pointed out, the line they drew is “as fair and inclusive as any method devised thus far.”
So to you, it’s fairer to have Semenya take medication to slow herself down
The IAAF Court of Arbitration for Sport press release specifically states: “The DSD covered by the Regulations are limited to athletes with ’46 XY DSD’ – i.e. conditions where the affected individual has XY chromosomes.” If she wasn’t XY, the IAAF’s regulations wouldn’t apply to her and she’d have no reason to…
This ruling deals specifically with 46 XY DSD. I don’t think they’ve ever made her testing public. But, this is how she is affected by the ruling which implies that this is her genetic makeup. She identifies as female and that is to be respected. However, she is not a genetic female under the current rules. (She would…
The preferred term is intersex. But as noted by others, her medical records haven’t been released so just assuming she is intersex is not undisputed fact.
She has XY chromosomes. That was confirmed in the ruling.
Back in 2009, the gender test was done on her it was released that she has no ovaries, no womb but has internal testes which are responsible for her hyperandrogenism.
The ruling made yesterday “are limited to athletes with ’46 XY DSD”
This affects Semenya, so you tell me.
Why is it so difficult for people to understand that the CAS ruling ONLY APPLIES to those with 46 XY DSD. If Caster falls under this ruling, which it is apparent she does, we need to look at what 46 XY DSD means SCIENTIFICALLY. All forms of 46 XY DSD have internal testes. If she falls into this category SCIENCE has…
