I think Brits generally have a very low tolerance to any kind of fakery, even if it’s mutually-understood showbiz fakery. It’s a sure fire way to quickly make the audience antagonistic and unamused.

It’s weird that you consider the Graham Norton Show to be the UK’s main talk show. Five years ago it would’ve been Jonathan Ross no question, and he is still on ITV. But yeah, Graham Norton tends to be funnier these days.
