I thought it was an excellent return to the early random adventure format, while still making use of the years of world and character building the show has accrued. The previous episode evoked a similar feeling. Also, we finally got to meet Huntress Wizard, how can that be bad?

I think they're intentionally slowly unfolding Steven's realization that he is uniquely neither Gem nor Human and there's some downside to that. Also, of course, he never even knew his mom.

I don't have a problem with Dr. M being oddly unphased by the gem monstrosities. In this world, as in a number of semi-fantastical worlds, it's pretty clear that most baseline humans are completely Reality Blind to the magical whatever is going on in the background. It's just how the show works. It doesn't mean
