Agreed; a version of this trick that I like better is to think in terms of priority - replacing "I can't because I'm too busy" with "It's not a priority for me", and "I have to do this" with "This is a high priority." It makes you feel very silly when you say (or even think) something like "Sorry, going to dinner with
