He doesn't seem to do a very good job of finding/retaining said capable peoples to manage that space, either. His ego tends to get the better of his judgment a little too often.

Guys don't dump friends, they just fade away. That way, who knows, down the road your interests might converge and you're friends again. It's a very elastic concept.
