These people are missing the point. It’s not about Singapore. It’s about rich Chinese in Singapore. The way the book is, except for the frequent references to street food, the families and characters could have been expats in Canada or London, because the world they inhabit is so insular and small.

I’ve read the book and know what this is supposed to be.

“Would like to” means, nothing is set or even contracted.

He made that choice, to be what the public wanted, likely due to the childhood and adult poverty he and his family faced. It was probably a long time until he felt economically comfortable enough to start doing what he wanted in his career.  

It’s not a necessary film. It brings nothing to the table emotionally except shock and revulsion. Which is fine if your a cineaste or a film student or just a curious observer of film.
