There was a death metal band member some years ago, who killed a man basically because he felt like it (and also because he thought the guy might be gay). Did 12 years and was released, has a family now and the state is like, “Oh, he did his time, fuck it.”

The problem IS the brutality AS WELL as the institutional racism. Being locked up while innocent or for minor crimes is bad enough. But having to deal with the dehumanization and brutality of prison life is FAR worse.
