The point about destroying every enemy and not experiencing boss fights reminds me of plowing through tiers in Diablo 3 and taking down Diablo in a couple seconds to watch the loot pour out. Why wouldn’t this work in Destiny?

You can’t steal ships, I believe the author is referring to the fact that the GHDF all use a particular ship/color scheme and that a third party could find out where to obtain that ship and pass for a GHDF. It’s pretty much just role play though, there is nothing really at stake.
You won’t be missing anything. Even if you didn’t play through then Foundation or Atlas Rises updates, you would receive those quests on your launch save.
Try flying around or looking for a continent from space. Took me about 10 min following some npc ships to find a continent on what I thought was a water world last night. Turns out it has continents, huge mountains, fauna everywhere, low security- it's perfect and I almost boned out because I didn't know continents…
