I live in a smaller Midwestern college town and every server I know is well versed in Celiac's. Sometimes more so than those complaining of an allergy. (Granted I work at a bakery so half my day is telling people to fuck off* for even walking in and expecting accommodation.)

That's the entire point though. There has to be a level of callousness when routinely dealing with the death of small children. The headline suits the essay to a T and you are doing the entire piece a great disservice by judging it based on a title.

Truth speaker

You're right. That was a genuine question of who foots the bill. But I don't see police taking a complaint of catcalling very seriously, do you?

Per the linked-through article, municipalities with similar ordinances have trouble convicting on victim testimony alone.

exactly. She needs to own that and not stoop to this.

It reminds me a lot of the failed panhandling ordinance in my town in that sense. A nuisance befitting a nuisance.

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck *headdesk*

right? My initial thought was, "Neither of you are Nicki" and then "Holy shit J. Lo have some self respect"

Well.....

Is that video so engrained in my brain that I knew it was Love Don't Cost A Thing or is that song just that awesome?

I made it a minute in and it was frantic and horrible.

You're totally right, but I have trouble seeing why a victim would bring a suit against someone on their own dime if it isn't witnessed by a police officer. Would the municipality foot the bill?

Exactly. This ordinance has so poorly worded you could probably defend yourself from a conviction successfully.

If you read the linked-through article it states that municipalities with similar ordinances have a problem with conviction on victim testimony alone. Not to mention this ordinance is written in such vague bullshit legalese any lawyer worth his two-bit criminal justice associates will be able to worm their clients way

Say you're a catcalling type coward driving on the road and you see a lone honey walking alone down the street. Even if a cop is behind you chances are they won't hear what you scream out of your window. There is no legitimate imminent threat to cat callers, even if it is illegal.

You would have to be recording your entire walk home then. Not saying that's impossible, just impractical.

Exactly. I see some people in the comments talking about video/audio recordings, but these instances are usually seconds-long encounters. Burden of proof still being on the victim even if you do get it on camera.

Hey, there's always PPKM on our side of the border.

This is virtually impossible to enforce. Victim statements aren't enough for a conviction so barring a police officer actually witnessing street harassment this is a waste of time.
