“A truly enlightened mind recognizes that simplified escapism is a perfectly valid way to entertain yourself at times.”

Pretty sure you mean *restrict* your horizons. But it’s not like it matters — it’s a comment thread for another terrible MSA-gasm movie. The comments should be as stupid as the movie in question, right?
*fart, scratch, reddit, fap, find another dude to high five, briefly mention we’re smart when we want to be, repeat*

Let me clarify a bit, because (though you quoted it) I’m not sure if you read my statement. To rehash, “Reburns” stated that “I feel like people are watching these movies for all the wrong reasons. Like, turn off your fucking brain and enjoy the superhuman slugfest for what it is, and then turn your brain back on

Wow, if expecting a movie to have a reasonably engaging plot makes me a pretentious snob then so be it. That bar is damn low.

Agreed. There can still be dumb popcorn flicks that have engaging characters and not just cool visuals.

Nope, wrong. All films fall into one of two camps in terms of goodness and coolness: they’re either a “My Dinner With Andre” or a “Chainsaw Buttfuck 6".

Good for you, you have the same taste in entertainment as a ten-year-old.

That’s true, but I feel like watching a two hour movie and deliberately ignoring 80% of the content on-screen just to watch the 20% with action in it seems like a big waste of time.

You’re putting way too much thought into this.

Wow. That’s not what’s going on at all. People went in expecting McDonalds, and are complaining that they got a burger made of overcooked, flavourless “beef”, a stale bun, and ketchup that’s a few months past its best before date.

There’s a vast and healthy middle ground between mindless entertainment and intellectual fulfillment.

“A truly enlightened mind...”

“If that pains you then I’d suggest you need to expand your horizons a bit.”

This is the same bullshit argument that keeps Michael Bay in business making those godawful Transformer movies.

Yeah, well, here’s the thing, some people don’t go to watch fucking superhero movies because we care about their intrinsic cultural value or whatever.

Except most of the reviews I’ve read are essentially saying, “This movie is no fun . We wish we could turn our brains off, but they keep trying to cram in themes and heavy, portentous stuff that makes no sense.”

Good thing it’s not a zero sum situation - movies can have both cool and good fights and a story that isn’t insultingly stupid. In fact a good story makes cool and good fights cooler and gooder, because you care about the characters!

This movie is doing everything it can to portray itself as smart and thoughtful. The filmmakers are not telling you to turn your brain off.

Look at it this way: How much did the studio spend on this movie? $100 million? $150 million? NOPE—$250 million. For a quarter-billion dollars, don’t you want the best director, the best acting, the best script you could possibly get? Action movies don’t have to be stupid (witness the first Iron Man and Avengers movies

With that mentality, wouldn’t it be more accurate to say *retract* your horizons? Because it certainly isn’t expanding someone’s horizons to basically descend to the level of a drooling nitwit when it comes to your stated movie preferences.
