They also have a fully electric BEV for less than $40k equivalent (including all taxes and excluding the tax credit).

Agree 100%. We subsidize the fossil fuel industry to a massive degree (and have for close to a hundred years). Let oil and gas pay its own way and switch the subsidies to battery production, solar, and wind.  Zero cost proposal and huge societal benefits.  Win win
