Hey, I’m just relieved you all survived Lord of the Flies. But I know it was always gratifying as an English major to encounter other students and professors who confirm ideas you had about certain books crammed down your throat in high school. I knew this book sucked! I knew I wasn’t the only one who thought so!

The additional horror was that my choices were like Lord of the Flies or The Red Badge of Courage and maybe The Pearl. A buffet of crap-filled diapers to shove onto innocent high school students to make sure they never voluntarily read “literature” for at least twenty years.

On a personal note, I may be over-doing it in the Lord of the Flies hate club, because in my two years of teaching high school many years ago I was saddled with teaching it. FOUR HOURS A DAY. TWO YEARS. It just became one of those novels I don’t ever want to pick up again.

It’s definitely going to suck. And I can’t WAIT to see what they do with the character from the novel (and the movie adaptations) known, not very affectionately, as “Piggy” who was also plagued by asthma. You just KNOW they’re gonna negotiate that whirlpool flawlessly.

If 45 knew anything about history, he’d know that “fucking with the military” helped shut down McCarthyism at the height of the Cold War.
