They were; I remember them well. Smashing Pumpkins' "Tonight Tonight" was the big winner (as it should have been). The show opened with that performance.

Summer of '96 was the pinnacle of nostalgia for me too. 5 years later I even made a double-album mix CD of all the music I liked from then; I can share the list if you really want.
