I think this has more to do with government officials getting enjoyment out of punishing criminals in odd ways.  The products were designed to be a pain in the ass as an extra little FU to people.

This is the natural evolution of our society’s constant demonization of drinking and driving. We treat it as an ever-present evil that must be snuffed out at all costs, rather a poor decision that a few people make.

If they are like the handheld ones I use, they don’t pick up mouth wash at all.

There are much better cars than the E46 out there, but this is a great example if you want “enthusiast spec”.

This isn’t an S, it’s a 2+2, which MSRPed in the mid 60s and were discounted (remember the great recession?).  These were high 50s cars when new.

I don’t think price was the issue. GM added the LT1 trim, which made the base V8 cheaper than a Mustang GT and it still didn’t bump sales.

Similar to Japan, Germany doesn’t have resources to produce batteries, so this becomes a national security issue for the country.

It’s a niche car. And its niche is, “kind of expensive for the relative performance” but the trade-off is that owners have a really exclusive car that hardly anyone recognizes.

The Elise is never coming back though.

The Evora (and now the Emira) is my dream car. I never pulled the trigger because the only dealer is two hours away and I’m not quite comfortable enough with my wrenching chops to do everything myself.

It’s always easy to justify taxes/fines against wrong doers.
