The problem is that, even though we are discussing a small percentage of the population, the stakes are really high. It’s not just about giving trans actors a chance to work, or anything like that. Someone upthread posted a link to an opinion piece on Slate which lays it out well:

Yea, people pointed out that she is filming marvel films around this so she can’t even gain wait for the role.  So I expect a weird fatsuit.

It’s more about the fact that Gay actors can (and are) offered roles for straight characters as well as gay characters, whereas trans actors are really ever offered trans roles and not cisgendered roles.  So they are blocked from the majority of acting roles being created now, and then when you have cis actors taking…

Trans actors absolutely need more visibility, and roles. But I don’t think you achieve that by narrowing the range of characters an actor can play, you achieve that by giving trans actors more roles, period. Who says trans actors can only be cast as trans characters?

Can a straight actor not play a gay actor because it’s actively oppressing gay voices?
