I seems to share several direct and warm smiles with him. Rather than condescending, I took them to be apologetic, a nod to the fact that she knows this is not the best corcumstance. On the transcript, she will come off as a pro, and actually does go out of her way to point out to everyone how nice she knows he is.

I love acid.

Serena Williams is amazing. She won her first major in 1999. Sixteen years ago! And now she's making a run at a grand slam. It's hard to think of too many athletes who have remained so dominant for so long. Tim Duncan? Kareem Abdul-Jabbar? Peyton Manning? Babe Ruth?

You raise a good point I didn’t even think about... The stark contrast in where their lives have gone. A moment of sadness, regret and shame for this man. Which just makes his reaction even more heartbreaking :(

Raised eyebrows from a judge due to something personal is as much expression of shock as she could ethically and professionally do.

Those are the perks of being the top comment - if you know how it works, why comment like that in the first place?

I can only imagine. In this, you can tell it’s after the hearing, so she didn’t even say anything about recognizing him until the “work” portion was done, but the little she did say I think spoke volumes. Obviously it was very touching to him that she remembered him. Not everyone has has someone that believes they can

I understand the reactions here. She remembered him from grade school and thought it was interesting seeing him there. He, on the other hand, realized in that instance the person that he had turned into since then and lost it. Like going to a high school reunion and realizing Joe had become a multi-business owner with

I could see her struggle. I had a somewhat similar situation. I had a client brought in for anger management stemming from child endangerment charges. She looked somewhat familiar and I wondered if she had been in a similar program or worked with another case manager in my office.

They were loud during points was the problem. Which isn’t unusual and frankly, I don’t get the big deal but she did complain and the commentators agreed with her that the outbursts were happening inappropriately. I think they were just excited that an underdog was winning AND she was British.

Now playing

Hate to be the pedantic Brit but Guernsey is not part of England (or even the UK), it’s one of the Channel Islands.

Of course she’s going to be “judgy-pants McJudge” because that’s her job and she has to be impartial and well...pass judgment.

Have you ever sat in on a trial or sentencing hearing? You can hear in her tone that she is emotional, they weren’t besties but she is totally breaking her judge demeanour for this.

She’s a judge, after all. She has to remain professional and do her job. What is she supposed to do? Clearly there was a lot of emotion, and she did not seem sanctimonious.

Pretty much this. She’s got to show that she’s a professional. What’s sad is that you just see all the childhood memories coming back to the man. Hopefully he’ll realize the errors of his ways.

She’s still on the job

She still has to remain professional in her position, and I think this is amazing and she is still conveying the person she remembers with dignity and hope to him. Makes me have hope for him that he will reflect with her remembering him “back when”, you know?

I mean, they aren’t tucked into a corner booth in a dimly lit diner confiding in each other. She’s at work.

I hope her kindness is a catalyst for him.
