Not even just for impersonations.  You could, in theory, just make a profile of some random name and post whatever the hell you want on it, but with the checkmark there, it can easily fool people into thinking it’s coming from a legitimate source.  So this just makes it easier to post nonsense but give it a better…

Yeah it was never actually for expertise - it was basically “are you important enough that people might pretend to be you so you need to prove it’s actually you tweeting,” with what was “important enough” never really explained. 

They were for expertise? I thought it was a verification of the actual identity of a notable person, with notable basically intending to cover public figures, celebrities and published journalists at significant media outlets.

That’s not what they’re for; it’s just to show that the account is the actual account for the actual person it claims to be.

How quickly this is falling apart on him is hilarious to watch though.
