The article literally says the adaptation takes place in “New Manhattan.” Pretty safe bet that this won’t be taking place in Japan.

And before you “But it doesn’t need to take place in Japan” me, the significance of Japan’s connection with the A-Bomb is a significant motif in the movie.

Neo-Auckland

Well we had the Netflix’s remake of Death Note which was slightly amusing

It’s why Marvel Studios still hasn’t gotten the Fantastic Four back. Because 20th Century Fox would rather waste everyone’s time and money with a string of terrible, shortsighted reboots instead of admitting defeat, saving themselves trouble and just forfeiting the rights to those characters.

Theatrical cut was so much better, in that it actually explained character actions and filled in missing plot, but I didn’t really hate the original as much as some either.

why?

WAIKIKIIIIIII

To be fair both the manga and movie of Akira had their share of dark humor in them primarily from the teenage boys acting like teenage boys even in the face of the apocalypse along with how much society had devolved over time, which was of course juxtaposed with some truly horrific stuff, but there was levity in Akira

Let it go, Warner’s. You’ve squeezed all the blood you’re going to get from it, (possibly barring the Doomsday Clock comic event, which will likely get its mileage from pondering whether the Watchmen characters are too dark to continue being an influence on cape comics). The Snyder film, for all its flaws, was one of

Would you settle for Neo-Boise?

Wow, that’s further along that I’d thought.

I definitely give more of a shit about this adaptation meaning not getting to see this interesting director do something original than I do about the integrity of the Akira property.

We’re werewolves. Not swearwolves.

No, Mr Waititi! No! What We do in the Shadows was great, Hunt of the Wilderpeople was very good, Thor:Ragnarok has my full attention, but 1) This is a movie that probably shouldn’t exist at all, and 2) the way you mix screwball humor into other genres doesn’t fit with Akira, no matter how good you are at it.

some context missing here is that Taika Waititi is actually a great director. the best or even a good choice? idk. but he has a very solid resume.

He’ll cast Maori actors instead.

Ryan Gosling. Because he’s from CAN-AY-DA!!!!

There isn’t going to be an Akira adaptation, especially if they cast white people for the leads. It didn’t work with the Death Note movie, it didn’t work with DBE, and it certainly didn’t work when they made whitewashing the protagonist a plot point in GitS.

Rhys Darby, obviously.
