I was half-joking because so many of us closed shop years ago when demand dropped off. The market today is probably about a tenth of the size it was a decade ago.

Whenever I carry a Windows PC, I always find I’m missing something I really need, usually a command line tool. This may change when Ubuntu is rolled in to Windows, but for now, Mac is the most versatile system. It has all my mainstream software, all my command line tools, and with a VM, all my Windows domain

It’s true, but it can also depend. I can only speak for myself, but I have fibro. I care a lot more about portrayal than if the actor has fibro. And an actor with more mild fibro might portray severe fibro less accurately than an actor who does not. I care more about showing how proper support and care matter than if

Could be a setup at a university or something. I did a lot of onsite work when I worked for a university. Primarily managed the computer labs, but every once in awhile we would handle fixing problems a professor was having.

Peter Dinklage was a struggling actor turning down leprechaun roles for years (not a joke, he really did) before being discovered. Now he gets cast in roles where his dwarfism is not a plot point, he’s just a guy. Same could happen for a star with mobility issues. But nobody’s casting a big Hollywood weeper starring a

Sure. It’s a chunk of budget, but sure. But first you have to come up with the talented, romantic-lead handsome, charismatic lead actor in a wheelchair. It’s not that he isn’t out there, but until that guy is found, they’re going to cast people who have the financial backers’ faith that they can open a movie.

In the book it’s clearly illustrated that he’s in a great deal of pain, can’t regulate his body temperature, and is extremely vulnerable to dying from any minor infection. He’s a very strong character who despite the best support system decides that horrific pain and suffering is not the life he wants to lead. It’s

He still made a choice, a choice that I probably make myself in the end. As someone who fully supportive of assisted suicide and to an extent suicide I would probably choose the same if I ended up fully disabled.

As someone who lives in severe, chronic pain with no hope of it ever getting better and 100% chance it will get worse? Fuck concern trolling. It’s my right when I decide my story is done.

He could be running Windows on the Macbook if he needs it

There is an ongoing debate among disabled people about person first language. Some people with disabilities use it and prefer it; others don’t.

Yes, fie on those lazy casting directors that don’t look hard enough, right?

Siiiiiiiiigh. I read the book. Haven’t seen the movie, probably won’t.

Is awkward and clunky and artless.

So basically, pro-lifers are complaining about a pro-choice film? The tone of this piece is very different than it would be if the movie/book were about a woman who chose to have an abortion and pro-lifers were complaining about the depiction of someone making that choice.

But the book is just one depiction of being differently abled and the choices that individual makes. I don’t think it is meant to represent something greater.

Why not watch the movie before writing an article telling people it’s bad? The movie is out, right? Or is it a Jezebel policy not to watch movies before “reviewing” them and declaring they’re problematic in how they depict X (women, disability, LGBTI people, racial minorities, etc)?

As someone with a disability can I just say that while this isn’t the norm for people with disabilities, this is absolutely the case for some people.

Every last person on Earth must be fictionally represented perfectly and just as they’d choose to be at all times. No matter what. #realistic

For God’s sake, not every single story has to be relevant to every single person in that situation. Creators make choices all the time. There’s a happy story to be told about someone who is injured in a horrific accident and ends up completely paralysed but still falls in love, lives a good fulfilled life, etc etc -
