You know what’s embarrassing? My boyfriend’s family is South Korean and they’re too afraid to come to the US because they’re afraid of being shot. Our whole entire country has the reputation of the wild wild west.

I’m Indian, and I don’t think what that person said was racist. The rape culture in India is NOT similar to what our rape culture in America is. Yes, both are heinous, etc, etc, but to pretend that what goes on to women in America is even remotely close to what women in India go through is extreme willful ignorance.
I hear your pain, but... Don’t we blame American culture and nationality for American crimes all the time? “ ‘Murica! HUR DUR” is something I see at least once a day.
Yes, because America has village elders sentencing girls to rape.
This is a “tu quoque” defense. It’s a logical fallacy. Yes, the US has deep systemic racism and sexism as part of its structure, see the “Black Lives Matters” movement.
What I hate is how the issue gets confused with mental health. I work in mental health. We don’t perform magic. One of the most important things we do is risk management. If someone is suicidal, take away the guns and knives and ropes and pills, ect. We’re not going to magically fix people who are homicidal but it…
I understand the difficulty of hearing about one’s own culutre being torn down, but it’s possible to discuss the shortcomings of India’s complex rape culture while still acknowledging the United States’ own tremendous failings with institutionalized sexual violence, no?
That’s...patently untrue. I mean, literally every single article about a rape in the US here on Jezebel has the term “rape culture” in it and points towards the systematic misogyny and sexism that lies at the heart of the frequent rape cases in the US. There is definitely some shocking racism going on in the comments,…
In America you don’t have the local town council deciding that anyone that didn’t pay their trash collection fee is going to need to submit one of their daughters for rape.
That’s an infantile response. Rape anywhere is hideous. Rape as a means of formally sanctioning is particularly abhorrent and certainly worth highlighting and denouncing. But don't turn this into some kind of morbid competition.
I think the difference in gun culture between the U.S. and Canada (and other Commonwealth nations) is that the U.S. was born out of violence. Because the country was formed in a pretty bloody revolution, violence has always been thought of as a solution. Look at American movie heroes- cowboys, cops, detectives,…
It’s probably possible to find fault with any country or culture. Nevertheless some incidents are particularly disturbing, as is the case with this one. So while I am mad about for instance the US being stupid about gun control, about the EU being stupid about refugees from Syria and people from Africa seeking to…
Oh please, there is no country that Jezebel commenters condemn more broadly and universally than the U.S. If someone kicked a cat and it got reported on Jezebel, there would be universal condemnation of America. Also, this is the Internet, the land of generalizations.
Rapes as sentences dictacted by non-government psuedo local councils as punishments for actions others have done, and which are supported by the community? No, this does not happen in America. Stop being a part of the problem by trying to defend the shitty parts of your peoples’ culture and instead admit that it’s…
I've been saying that all along much to the chagrin of my very educated, progressive, liberal friends. I don't give ANY religions a pass.
We don’t have unelected groups of men in rural areas sentencing children to rape. Signed an American.
Sure, rape culture is not a problem that exists in India only, although we cannot deny how pervasive and brutal it is. However, the prevalence of rape culture is not the only thing that this criticism of India is about. To ignore the caste system’s impact and to ignore how deeply ingrained it is in India is absolutely…
Wow, way to miss the points completely, and completely disregard how fucked up “the case” above is.
I know. I’m so tired of Westerners romanticizing Eastern religions. They are just as ghastly as Western religions.
Gun nuts are so fucking scary, you guys. I live in a blue state and went to a gun law forum after Sandy Hook.
