Good points, but I think those interpretations are complementary.

I was personally disappointed with the ending, and in particular the fairly cheeseball and on the nose moment of Donlightenment. I have developed a theory to salvage the final moments; whether or not this is the intended take away, it's what I'm choosing to believe.
